According to Wikipedia, the definition of feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, personal, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. Feminists typically advocate and support the rights and equality of women.
In today's society, the word feminism is used in almost a negative way and since the wikipedia definition can come across as a bit confusing, we will try to explain feminism in a much simpler way.
A lot of people think that being a feminist is to believe that world should be ruled by woman, and only women, but in fact it is not about man hating but rather about wanting equal rights for both men and women. The feminist movement is about wanting a better future for girls and women all over the world. In a work situation or social situation. The feminist movement is wanting to not sexualice women. It's wanting women to be able to wear a short skirt, or a tight top, without anyones judgment, and to do whatever they want to make them feel good. To say it simple: feminism is the belief that women should have the same political, social, and economic rights as men.
To be a feminist is not to stop shaving or stop wearing make up. It's about doing it for the right reasons. Are you shaving your legs because you think you can't be attractive with hair on your body? Or are you shaving because it makes you feel good about yourself? It's okay to wear makeup to impress boys but you shouldn't have to feel that you're not feminine or beautiful without it. Wearing makeup for yourself is just as important, either if it makes you more confident or it makes you feel pretty! People should not assume that just because a girl wears a lot of makeup, she is automatically searching for the attention or acceptance from boys.
We grow up with magazines, movies, and commercials telling us what to look like, but isn't it more important that we feel comfortable in our own skin? For years girls from all over the world have been drowning in shame after ending up as the victim of a sexual assault. They become the bearers of that burden. They should not have been there, they should not have wore that short dress and they should not have flirted. Girls are taught how to behave to avoid being raped, when it's really the the boys that should be taught not to rape. We need feminism to stop the sexulizing of women. A woman is not created for the pleasment of men. A woman is so much more than her body.
