Photo series: Snow globes

Every year, thousands leave their home behind to study in the U.K., which can be an exciting process where you get to know a new culture and discover new parts of yourself. But according to a recent survey by HSBC, two in five international students end up feeling homesick at least once a week or more.

We all have different ways of coping with homesickness, one being the act of surrounding oneself with meaningful objects. The materialistic shell having no say in determining the object’s value. Instead it is the cherished memories that belongs to it that makes it nothing but a treasure. They act as personalised snow globes: Each object being a window into a familiar time and place.

“My dad used this camera while traveling across Europe in the 70s, a time when it was still very challenging to to travel west of Hungary because of the strict communist regime.”

I used to play with it when I was younger but grew more seriously interested in analogue photography over the summer while traveling with my boyfriend. Now, there are so many sweet memories attached to it.

“Before I left for London, I had dinner with my best friends and they gave me this bracelet. The biggest circle is supposed to represent me and they're the tiny one connected to it.”

“Now I wear it every day because it reminds me of them. They’re my everything.”

“This Chanel-style purse was given to my grandmother by her friend who would sew purses for big brands. My grandma had it for a long time before giving it to my mother who later handed it down to me.”
